Aperture on the Web: Weekly News Roundup (March 19th)

aperture_news.jpg

Welcome to the beginning of a new series of weekly news roundups. Each friday this series will aim to present a quick roundup of Aperture related news from around the web for that week. So without further ado, here’s what’s interesting in the world of Aperture for the week of March 19th

Kelby Training has a new course on Aperture 3 from Rich Harrington, where he takes you through the various aspects of the software. This is interesting because Kelby Training (which offers some excellent training by the way) has traditionally been focused on Adobe software and it’s good to see them including Aperture.

The Bokeh Brothers website has an interesting article on moving from Lightroom to Aperture 3. They cover various aspects of making sure your metadata etc is brought over correctly

Apple posted a knowledge base article this week on why it’s important to use HFS+ formatted volumes for your Aperture libraries.

Another Knowledge Base article form Apple highlights some troubleshooting basics for Aperture users. Worth a read if you’re having trouble.

Faded and blurred does an interesting comparison of the quality of noise reduction between Lightroom 2, Lightroom 3 beta and Aperture 3. They debunk the commonly held belief among Lightroom supporters that Aperture’s noise handling is inferior (They find it the best of the three)

David Schloss over at the Aperture Users Network does a good job at debunking some recent criticism of Aperture by Matt Kloskowski over at Lightroom Killer Tips. I have to say, I was a bit surprised at Matt for the rather harsh and defensive nature of his arguments against Aperture. I have a great deal of respect for Matt and he is a great teacher, but Like David, I think his points about Aperture were way off the mark.

  1. Where you able to find anything on ordering contact sheets?

      Hi.

I checked back in Aperture 2 and there’s no feature in AP2 to Order contact sheets. You can print them all right but you can’t order them. I spent a good hour going through every menu and checking online and couldn’t find any reference to ordering contact sheets. Perhaps you had a plug-in or a script that did it.

There is a way you could do it though. If you were to print a contact sheet as a PDF then open that in preview and export it as a JPEG and import that back to Aperture, you could then order that as a Print. If that sounds a little long winded – there is actually a short cut. When you go to print in Aperture – in the system print dialog box (after you click print in the Aperture print dialog) there’s a PDF popup menu and one of the options is “save pdf to Aperture” – this does everything for you and re-imports the resulting file back into Aperture. Then all you have to do is order a print from the file menu.

If I get a chance I’ll do a full tutorial on this next week as being able to order contact sheets is a usefull feature.
